The burden born of another age…given freely
Taken freely…held as though a child were
Born,  resting within the weathered palms of
A man of four score years. A billion words,
Sacrifices Of an age long ago as wax rivers
Ran the night air and the pluck of a sleek
Shafted quill awaited the master‘s carving
Of a fine and delicate tip…sipping dark
Indigo and white parchment..perhaps even
stone…Left to be held, revered,  coveted by
they whose passage was yet to wear the
trail of a dozen languages,  a million eyes.

Oh my Lord,  keep from me the last breath,
Let not my lips fail before this gift of artistry
Is preciously accepted and placed honorably
away,  kept amongst the flowers blooming,
the clutch of a vine circling the mother shaft,
As did the words of  endless generations,
Entwining…ever entwining…

The softly spoken whisper…“We must”
Carried across the red waters of life’s
Blood.  Carved into the soul,  burned
Into the trunk of an ageless tree.   Washed
Ashore within a bottle…left,    to dry….
To bring the words together once more…

“We must”…. for it is the words,  the
Chills of one’s back,  the sigh of one’s
Lips….the trace of one’s hand upon the
Skin of another’s soul…..It is they who
Must….must protect the words….written,
Died for….hidden….and now locked
Away….that one might see  …. Upon
Another day…. Why… “We Must”…

This poem is about art, particularly poetry...
the need to preserve and protect it that others
might always have the ability to see the writings
of the great ones...

The man was a fictional Sentinel....a keeper of the key to a vault....where all of the treasures were kept. For all of time...

Yes, 'we must', Barry, and we do by reading, contemplating, and understanding.

Perhaps these kind of treasures we must both guard and protect, as well as offer freely on the wandering footsteps of wind to all the corners of the earth.

Right now, this day, this moment ... you have touched my ink more than you will know~
