Pretend

if I pretended that
I didn’t love you
would it go away
when I was a girl
my sisters and I
tied June bugs to strings
and let them float
in cotton clouds of blue
like they were kites
or funny balloons
when we were all done
we let them go flying free
and as I look back on that
at the end of the day
all we really had still
was a bunch of bugs
that were tied to a string

Trust me on this...it doesn't go away.

I loved the story, I loved the ending. So nice to see you post.

Hey you . . . it's not supposed to go away.
If it does it wasn't true in the first place.
Real love never goes away; is never lost; never just disappears as some say.  You don't fall out of love . . . maybe out of lust, or want, or see what you believe is greener grass, or don't like the one you love anymore, but if one loves . . . really loves, it never, ever goes away.

And for those of us who love and don't have all the other reasons for leaving, that's especially hard to accept, so we ask, as you so aptly did "if I pretended that I didn’t love you would it go away".

No.

I can just imagine you with those bugs

it does bring a smile, like you never fail to do

I agree with the others....even if we
pretend it was nothing. If it actually was
something, it's still there. It will never
leave completely.

We can wish, sometimes, that it would go away.  But, I think love lingers in our memories to help us reach out again.  It's that part that is painful but -- we remember the beauty too.

Like your poem, I will remember the beauty of this poem .. and the June Bugs.  I have never seen a June Bug.
