Time,
my bondage from thee.
For in thine eyes I am but a wisp
of he that desireth thee.  My gait
now a hobbled step.

Can thee ever know of love
within a trickling brook below
an old mill that waits
the grain?

Or...
Feel the softness of delicate
touch and have a torrent of desire fill
thee as a river rages through
a withered soul?

If but once,
I might hear the sigh of
morning’s wake as rays warm the
satin pillow.  Or plait the silken
tress before the mirror’s reflect.

Or, once drain the fount’s crystal, that
I might swill the wine of youth
against my silent tongue.

In silence I grieve. My sorrow
sealed...as dreams swill the
palate’s nectar.

Men Improve With The Years
By William Butler Yeats
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  I am worn out with dreams;
A weather-worn, marble triton
Among the streams;
And all day long I look
Upon this lady's beauty
As though I had found in a book
A pictured beauty,
pleased to have filled the eyes
Or the discerning ears,
Delighted to be but wise,
For men improve with the years;
And yet, and yet,
Is this my dream, or the truth?
O would that we had met
When I had my burning youth!
But I grow old among dreams,
A weather-worn, marble triton
Among the streams.

Melancholy, yet beautiful Barry.
Mayhaps we can hobble together?  (just kiddin')

So sad...makes me think of a friend who just lost her father and her mother now appears to be not far behind.  Sad, but it does reflect a lovely dance.  *hugs*...jo

This is a poem of an older man,  trying or
wanting the affection of a much younger
woman...without telling her his desires...

So, there ya have it...

Deeply touching, wonderfully worded. Another masterpiece from your pen.

Reminded me of "Men Improve with the Years", by William Butler Yeats.

A timeless topic, despite the content, or perhaps, more accurately, because of it.

Well done.

"If but once" - but once is never enough and I think the "if but again" is perhaps worse.  All that aside, wonderful write!  Much enjoyed!
