in the shadows

.

Alice is from Wonderland and doesn't love the Cat,
she showed up chasing Peter Pan
with no clue to where he's at;
one foot on the trail,
tight rolled script kept handy
calling for a frail play acted shadow,
just a little shopworn
but still decent arm candy
trading favors for a little shelter
and maybe a sled to ride.
Peter's got to be here
she can feel him always somewhere near,
hiding in plain sight
all audience and checkbook
never substance to his life,
half buried in a mess of wasted pork rind bags
empty beer cans and the like;
she dreads the little tussles in the mornings when he wakes
but she always has been practical enough
to swallow what it takes;
mercy is a bird
that leaves no tracks on the smooth rock surface
of a hardened woman's heart.
It's almost come to closing time,
she's felt it rolling from the start
like an angry tiger tank
on a suicidal mission
like waves hammering a sinking ship
until it comes apart
like a freight train
losing brakes early on a downhill run
she knew where it would end long before it had begun,
only the final moments are unsure,
wearing Wendy's aprons never had been fun
and Peter's treasure chest of baubles
has long lost its allure.

Can well imagine this scenario.  So many good metaphors in this one, Mr. C.  Once a woman's heart has hardened, only heat can melt it.  The trick, I think, must be for the man to know where to find the match to rekindle the fire. But then again, sometimes, even that won't work.  *hugs*...jo

Then there are some who would give anything for a hard heart - some people have all the luck.     Good write as usual, Mr. C!

BTW, Mr. C., I thought the title was an excellent choice in getting the point across.   ....jo

I was always mortified by Peter & Co....when you get right down to it, they did some pretty detestable things in their dream world he'd created, but the worst of it was, that world had no consequences in it and therefore nothing of value.

I hope she finds him and drags him away from Wendy by the, um, ears.....
