It was 9.30am when my phone sprang to life,
Carrying your voice from your desk,
Ninety three floors closer to heaven than I.
Our daily routine of small talk,
A strong coffee and a shared smile.

But this day was not for our smiles,
The rhythmic click of computer keys,
replaced by the soft sound of lost hope,
With trembling voice you told me,
that you were fine.
Convincing no-one, yet still holding
tight to the hand of a fading miracle.

We knew.
Even as the world viewed events
through celluloid eyes,
We knew that this was the gentle breath
Of goodbye.
And I saw you, hair strewn with
rainbow confetti, dancing
on our wedding day,
Cradling our newborn son,
Finding your first grey hair.

"Goodbye my love"
I didn’t want to answer.
To say the words would make it real
and I was not ready to let go.
"Tell the children I love them"
I would fill their lifetime with memories of you.
"I have to go, it’s getting dark"
And then...nothing.
Days later, I light a candle,
Place a single rose by a fireman’s helmet.
And I go home,
Drink a strong coffee and watch our children play.

This is so very heartwrenching.  I am so sorry for your loss and this is a beautiful tribute.
