Lethargic, she lies in the creaking swing
That hugs what shade the yard offers,
Breeze blowing over hot skin only
When one foot makes the effort to push.

Blouse soaked from morning chores
She draws full skirt high between damp thighs
Wishing her Pa would let her wear pants –
She works hard as any man.

Underneath the porch, mama-dog drops
With relief moans into the cooler earth
Settling to soothe her swollen belly
That churns with pup heads eager for birth

Timmy’s down at the swimming hole
Uncaring that not much is left but mud
Reeking with the stench of fish dying
In a stream that’s drying just like the hay

She’ll have to move in just a moment –
Start supper simmering as she feeds the pigs,
So she fans her face as she straightens her clothes
And slides in pool of sweat towards September

Ruth, that was just an incredible movie I just watched, I loved it!  Like you - I am up here "waiting for rain" to cool me down for the first time in years.  Happy Fall to you all.

Beautiful!
We are awaiting autumn and you are coming into summer...

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

Ruth

That swing, the full skirt and sweat of a woman's labor...so well described.  I loved the photo with feeling you took!!

Oh, I like this one.  The scene is sharp and strong, and the use of the skirt and the pregnant dog is subtle but to the point.

Suthern, Enjoyed. Put me in mind of another scene of farm life. Cousin Wes, who loved the farm working hard getting in the hay. Brother Joe who hated farm work lying under a tree.  Here comes Pa to check on the boys.  Quick thinking Joe pours water over his head. Wes still working hard. Pa sees Joe under the tree all wet and says. "Boy,You sure have been working hard today. Sit there and rest, Wes can finish
up". True story. LOL martyjo

So graphic, this poem! A different physical sensation in reading each line, and every one feels like I'm right there inside your skin.

I've been missing you, Laura....ol' Ed would like to see poem after poem from you.

suthern,

A portrait you have painted here with perfect brushing!  It is so easy to visual the atmosphere, mood, even the old mama dog waiting to drop those pups!  This is an amazing piece of art!  Definitely will add this to your others on my library shelf!

   Take care, suthern gal.
