Words Ignored
(Based on a childhood memory)

So many times as a child words went unheeded.
Parents would warn
and
they would scold.
But to this day-
I Wonder?
I was told many times-
“Stay away from that old house. You never know
if someone is inside wanting to do harm.”
A family had been killed in that old house.
They say an intruder did it, but no-one knew for sure.
People would walk by and hear strange noises and call the police, they never found
anything or anyone.
At night I would peek out my window
and
wonder in a curious child’s way.
What were the noises or were they cries from the tormented?
In my child’s mind they sounded like a child’s cry -A cry for help.
One afternoon I became brave enough to venture
close to that old house.
I stood and listened...looking at the broken windows and tattered curtains of lace.
Then a cry sliced through the warm summer air-
A scream that would chill you as if it were a cold winter day.
A sound beside me.... I look ......nothing.
Fear hit my legs and sets me in motion.
Home I run.... to my mother.
Tears and fear streaking across my face.
My mother wanting to know what happened.
I told her what had happened, she called the police.
The police.... not finding a person in sight.
As my mother calms me and puts me to bed.
I’m about to fall asleep and I remember the feeling as if something is
beside me at that old haunted house.
I look at my arm and see a large red welt
as if a hand had tried to grabme.
Then as children do.... I fell into the soft pillows of night time slumber.
Still to this day
I wonder?
Did it happen
or
was my imagination running wild?
Wild like a child who would not listen.

I think we have all experienced this in one way or another

Chills overtook me ... you put me right there~

Some childhood memories just won't lay down and die, will they ?

VERY vivid ... seems a total recall lingers~

Thank you for reading this lingering memory of the past. I still remember how frightened
I was. Shaking, crying. Needless to say...I never went near that old house again. Now it is an empty lot. Funny how no one ever built on that land. Just an empty space.

You grabbed my attention and held it tight.  I have never experienced this, don't want to - but I loved reading about it.

When I look back I wonder if it may have been kids in that old house. Maybe. As for the welt on the arm. Maybe in my fear I bumped my arm. Who knows ?
A family did die in that house and I was told to stay away from it. Needless to say  after my adventure "I STAYED AWAY."

Thanks everyone for your comments. Glad you enjoyed.

"Wild like a child who would not listen."

That line says it all...

Enjoyed.
