An ancient villa in Sicily, for decades
abandoned to the fierce incursions of time
and weather, lies baking in the furnace
of the mid-day sun. I stand at the foot
of a disused stairway, lichen-covered
steps ascending from the dark toward
the light. Green lizards scuttle over
the walls; dishevelled vines sprout
from crevices and cracks, seeking nourishment.

What malign secrets lie buried in this
Mediterranean ruin; what family vendettas
were played out here? There is an air
of silent mystery, an oppressive stillness
which longs for laughter and the sweet
blandishments of lovers. The whispers
of long-forgotten ghosts are all that
echoes now on this empty stairway
where I stand, looking toward the light.

The trapped souls of old Italian grandees
stand beside me--I can sense them
in the sweltering darkness, envying me
my physical ability to climb the crumbling
stonework; to walk into the light above.
They seek redemption for past sins and black
deeds; deeds fuelled by the heat and passion
of this Sicilian soil. I cannot help them--
I can only leave them, looking toward the light.

Well done!

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

You paint such atmosphere...and so, I could see this place and feel the pull from emotions past.  I haven't said until now...welcome to Passions!
