we put off for the island
before the fog burns
salts
from babies
we prefer grey to blue
choppy to smooth
windward to leeward
we know the keel of this boat well

we laugh early morning laughs
small jokes
left over from the night before
cradling cups of coffee and children
in hand knit sweaters and caps
the winters are long here
we learned young
to occupy ourselves

Nigel remembers when Spencer shot his toe off
duck hunting
Jesus Christ Nig
remember that
I was fifteen
Gramps thought that was the funniest thing
he’d ever seen

Sandy puts her hand over her mouth
laughing
remember when Becky put her tadpole jar
in the buffet drawer
Nana had a conniption
oh God but she was funny
spilled them all over the place

we speak
of salty memories
knitted tighter
than sweaters

Nana and Gramps
loved this island
Ron says

closer now
we quiet
watching for weathered grey shingles
water swollen docks

pull into old grey postcard
red geraniums dockside
memories burning off
with the fog

This is awesome. More than that, but I don't know the words. Imagine that, I don't know the words.
