One Sail, Reefed

A sail for you I am
while wind roars
and the waves
would rip you down
if I should break
and leave you helpless.

My very name means
torn and tied;
I am not swift
but I am strong for you.
When the wind would
shatter your spars,
I shed the wind

until a bay somewhere
looms up to shelter you.
Then I become your bay
and my name is
respite, relief.
I hold your anchor firm;

But when the storm is gone,
your world all blue again
and sparkling in the sun,
while a morning tide
comes flowing strong,

then I am harbor still
while you raise
your lovely spinnaker
and sail away.

Ah, and you watch her sail away, knowing another blow will come, and you'll be needed.  Sigh.

You almost make me a romantic.
