I can keep the doubles or go for a straight
yet still end up in a no-win state
because nothing survives if it’s a lie
and nothing escapes the great unchallenged
forward march of time.

And the deal again, deal again, deal
dismissive of wishes and needs
spews out the odd and mismatched
like a ceremonial dispatch
read for free just to please
a perverted sense of humour.

Yet there’s a pause and a moment before
making the last and final call
that sends me into the archives
to make sense of my memory ~
and I look up now from the past
with a smile of freedom at last.

There’s no holding on to a bad deal
unless, unless, it’s just a soul “thing”
that never can cash in the winnings ~
and so, and so, and so therefore I fold!

Well done!

yet very poetic....

Oh, excellent!  I read the title, and had to read it, because poker is my life.  Well, not really, but wouldn't it be adventuresome, if it was?  I like the way you stayed with your metaphor all the way through.  And hey, folding is playing the hand too.  Just a different way.

Thank you all so much for the read and Pilgrimage, you are so right - I just never looked at it that way.
LeeJ - thanks.  I'm glad you enjoyed my "to the point" words.
Interloper - if I can die with the words "well done" ringing in my head then I guess it would not have all been for nothing.

Helen

"I look up now from the past
with a smile of freedom at last."

Seems like that makes the game worth it, doesn't it?
