Upon the porch she heard a rap
a faint but rhythmic telling tap
that brought a brow to furrow deep
could this just be another creep?

The wind did howl and gust and blow
across the waters frothed below.
A shadow fell upon the porch
in flickers from a wind swept torch.

It was that bird of Nevermore
It had returned beyond the door.
It’s beak was sharp neath haunting eyes
that brought from me such gasping sighs.

Oh Grip, my friend and feathered foe
of days or yore and Edgar Poe
would thee now fly and not return
before this torch does cease to burn.

For you did drive your master mad
with such a test so grimly sad.
Your beak did break the shutter’s glass
and now is time to cook your grass.

And in the end the feathers flew
becoming but a beggars stew.
No taps will come again this eve
No tears shall fall, this we believe!

I'm a sucker for Poe
and you've woven him
so well into a story
all your own

I like it
yep, I do

enjoyed, Barry..did I ever tell you I went to the catacombs where Poe is buried in Baltimore? A friend's daughter was an English teacher, got married in the church where he is buried and the reception took us into the catacombs for the toast.

Later I met another group of poets from all over the world in Richmond VA and we visited his childhood home and  museum...

I had a hard time sleeping that night because the tv stations played Poe's movies and I was watching the Tell Tale Heart before falling asleep

Wonderful!
I like your style
And incidentally, Grip is still alive, in a library in Philadelphia. Of course they have him inside a glass case, couse his bite's so nasty
I enjoyed the read

Oh, Sir Poe-et, methinks ye know how thy words stir the imagination ~ and the blood ~ of this fair maiden.

I wait with bated breath for thy dark poems of All Hallow's Eve...

Your faithful fan,
LL
