Dawns greeting chorus

Early morning walk
Slow and easy pace
with no destination.

Gentle summer rain
Thoroughly drenched
Ride offers from motorists
Smile and reply "No thank you"

Hurried workers on a roof
Trying to beat the forecast
Coffee and cigarette offered
Smile and reply, "Thank you"

Scraping shingles, laying paper.
A days work for a days pay
What is needed always comes.

Mid-day returns the sun
Clothes steaming
Dry upon my body

Afternoon begins to fade

Job done and cash received
Smile and reply, "Thank you"

Early evening brings thunder

Returning to my home
Hidden deep within the woods

Friendly mongrel arrives
Anxious to share my supper
His evening routine
over the past three weeks.

He savors the green
trimmed from the edges
of the last of the bologna.

Three slices of bread
Two to sandwich the last
slice of unspoiled lunchmeat.
One offered to my guest.

Perhaps we will dine better
If there be a tomorrow

Darkness creeps into the trees.
Nightly visitor leaves.

Stormy night calls for shelter

Grateful for the large floor model
castaway color television cabinet
Dragged to camp and hollowed.
Slept in on nights such as this.

The scenes of the day replay
in my mind as I drift into slumber
I smile and reply "Thank you."

Dawns greeting chorus.
Early morning walk
Slow and easy pace

Ride offered from motorist
Smile and reply, "Thank you"
"Drop me off at the nearest store."

This poem -- wow! For my money it's as deserving of permanent publication as Frost's After Apple Picking. You write a book, I'm buyin' it.

And I see we have something unpleasant in common....oh gawd did I ever hate laying shingle...knew a guy who got a giant scare doing it, passed out from the heat and tumbled off the roof. Fortunately landed in a bush on the shady side of the house, but gee whiz.......

Thank you

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.
