Dune

One night I saw
while strolling sand
the solemn figure
of a man
against a stage
of chalk white dune,
the shoreline bathed
in pearly moon

As I came close
I heard him there
breathe in a breath
of tear soaked air.
And so I paused
a moment’s length
to gain a moment’s
weight of strength.

Dark waters came
in rising waves
like flapping bats
from sultry caves
that rose and spread
their daunting cloaks
more ominous
than canvas strokes

It was as though
a blackened sea
had targeted
his entity,
consuming footholds
as it went,
eroding hollows
with intent

He looked at me
as though to plea
a moment‘s length
of sanity
I saw in him
more dire a gloom
than where I stood
beside my dune

Above the cold
and salty deep,
the dawn washed up
from painful sleep
and bathed us both
in purple veils
like mystic mist
of spouting whales

Contentment seemed
a valid goal
within the reaches
of my soul.
Upon  his arm
I pressed my hand
like footprints laid
in tide washed sand

And as I turned
from his domain
I felt him breathe
a breath of pain
And knew my own
held much less gloom
than other souls
by other dunes

A gasping breath
of salty air,
enough to free
my own despair,
with scent of rose
clutched in his hand
that night as I
was strolling sand.
