Oh, Temptation, how swift you court Desire! So devious your ploy to snare a heart Into the net of your delicious fire — So deftly will you aim the honeyed dart! But ‘tis not the Laws nor lover’s soured song Which will bar the gate to your garden sweet - But the whispers of the Right and Wrong In deepest chambers of the heart’s retreat. So, wretched Temptation, cease thy futile quest And seek another victim to thy spells — For those but probing instruments to test The mind if false desire within dwells: But should the mind such hidden stain unveil, Then let the heart an unfeigned judge prevail.
