So Great a Love is Motherhood

So great a love is motherhood
More vast than summer skies
That should her love design the months
The twelve would be Julys

The twig would never bid the leaf
Go spinning to the ground
Nor maple shed her verdant cloak
To don a golden gown

Small icy flakes would never swirl
Into the blizzard’s blow
But then would mother grant her child
Delight in winter snow

July would bow to sparkling white
And wings of cardinal red
So little feet of happiness
Could sail a wooden sled

And thus would mother yield her power
To springtime’s fragrant hues
And bathe her babe abundantly
In periwinkle blues

The moon and sun would turn the year
As God had given birth
And God would still bless mothers with
The greatest love on earth

Elizabeth Santos

When you do, you drape us
in glory rags of need...
what we see before us
is nothing but truest verse...

We should succumb to treasures
like these, but the world prods
and pokes us into tomorrow, and only
the lucky ones...find some kiss of
knowledge, and love, given, freely,
and know, please, our arms are open
wide, to you...and yours.

My favorite part:
And thus would mother yield her power
To springtime’s fragrant hues
And bathe her babe abundantly
In periwinkle blues

Elizabeth, your poem is beautiful. I remember a long time ago reading a poem of yours called "Butterscotch Sky" and thinking how great it would be to read some of your other work.

Awe shucks!  That was surely the sweetest darn poem of yours I have read in a long time.  You can drape us in periwinkle blue any time and we will all be happy campers.  Love ya dear lady.

How sweet. Your babies are lucky to have such nice things for mom to read to them.

Oh, thank you, dear poets for your response to this poem. Sunshine, you warm my heart, poet lady. I have been plagued with health concerns lately (nothin' to whine about) but cancelled my trip to Russia (boo hoo). Was very warmed to hear from you all. Thank you for your comments

You do mothers proud! This poem is soooo you, Dear Liz! It radiates love, beauty, nature and joy. I was smiling with every word that I read.

You have such a nurturing spirit! It glows and flows into the souls and hearts of your readers.

I was sorry to read in one of your replies that you had to cancel your trip to Russia because of health concerns. I am sending some long-distance healing and a humongous loving hug your way. You are such a beautiful spirit  who deserves only the best that life has to offer.

Loving Light,
Linda

Motherhood becomes you

I have never read anything that surpasses this in beauty, nor in truth. You are truly a Poet's poet.
