Lumpy Oatmeal makes me Crazy!

My Sister and Me

One small hand enveloped in the warmth of one larger
Two small girls moving through the wildflowers
heading to a destination unknown
Fortified with peanut butter sandwiches
and jars of chocolate milk.
After traveling for a lifetime of minutes,
they find refuge in the dampness of an alder patch,
among the ferns
as the leaves form a canopy and capture the rays of the sun.
Speaking with songs of excitement,
they spread out their bounty
Giggling as they choke on dry bread smeared with the peanuty butter
washing it all down with the chocolate sweetness of the milk,
they did not know that the secret is that life is precious
They only knew that chocolate and peanut butter was heaven.
and that no journey is complete without both
as they faced the world with dark brown milk mustaches
and the scent of peanuts on their breath.

I wish I had taken such a trip with my baby sister...

years spread our time apart; so much so that our younger/older brother was in between...

and eight years is a deciding difference.

But...IF I could, I would take her back to a time when I could have been a better sister, not so eager to grow up...

not so eager to just grow away...

thank you for this.  I shall send it to her...

because peanut butter was, back then, a staple,

and chocolate milk, a luxury.
