in the shadows

                       .

With you morning was a time for song,
I would open every day with joy,
fasten my heart’s sails onto the wind,
decorate the tree of life with shimmering reflections
believing grainy snapshots were eternal;
now the memories of those days,
for me gone too many years
to hold as anything but shadows,
bring no feelings to my soul.

When I was very young,
when I counted time in dollars not in decades,
I ran on paths where trust was nothing
but a short lived fool’s delusion;
now in the long and sleepless nights of age,
when Moon illusions cast me out
and raging dreams show no mercy,
reason tells me nothing
as I am staring into time.

How differently we look at things as we grow older....it is so true.  This is lovely writing, but so sad...those dreams do haunt.

Totally unrelated, but...the title of your poem really threw me for a loop for a second.  Just when you were putting the poem on PIP, my son and I were looking at photos of Siberian Huskies and Malamutes on the internet (studying their wolf origins...).  He is getting a Malamute puppy in a couple of weeks which we drove to Waco yesterday to pick from the liter.  We don't have any sleds to pull here in Houston....wish me luck....a wolf in the house...omg.

"now the memories of those days,

Well, I don't believe that for one minute - memories always bring feelings and if we don't acknowledge them then we are simply in denial.  In any case, you couldn't have written this if there wasn't any feeling so, well done, Mr. icebox, you are a thinking and feeling human being - live with it.

Try as I might, I can never critique you.

I always just find myself sitting here thinking,

"You are so lovely."

sigh
