on the shores of
Lake Waban
they poetized
he whispered
   da mi basia mille
and she smiled a thousand kisses
in a very
very
proper manner

she replied
    I pay--in satin cash--
thanks to Miss Dickinson

hours rode by
made harder by the moment
a lone fixed star watched
shivering
breeze
loosed yellow locks
to fly sea lanes

risen from the dust
he murmured
I see dirty in your eyes

she righted the grass
straightened the world
rose
and sighed

I don’t believe those words
