I heard Mama fussing today
The way she sometimes did
When we'd neglected to obey
Too caught up in being kids.
The hour was late, I must confess
Angry words were spoken
We'd gotten much too loud I guess
The camel's back was broken.
Our party had been spoiled
Time for bed, no need to whimper
Cherokee blood had boiled
The lid was off her temper.
Little sister and I had been singing
Which woke Mama from her dreams
Now our ears were ringing
From angry banshee screams.
It was time for law and order
Sis ran to her room in tears
I turned off the tape recorder
Fast forward over thirty years.
Twenty two since she passed away
And now the tape was found
I heard Mama fussing today
Oh God !   What a beautiful sound !

*smiles* wonderful write!

I've been converting cassettes to CDs for my grandfather of his sisters and dad singing.  It's so heart touching to hear the voices of family I never got to meet.

Thanks for sharing!

Congratulations on being smart enough to record your memories before it was too late.  Love, Joyce

Oh my this touched my heart!
I too have such memories...on 8mm.
I've had them converted to DVD & VCR.
In fact..just had one done for my sister Nightshade's birthday. (shhh)
With all our family gone,
it is a joy to see them come alive on the tv screen.
You are fortunate to have your mother's voice on tape..
I don't recall my mom or dad's voices..only in my dreams.
~ & , for the memories, Nancy~

What a wonderful treasure to find! I can only imagine how you must have felt when you found it.  I recently found a novel that my brother wrote -- he's been dead a while now.  It is like he reached out and hugged me and told me, again, that he loves me.

Ah Larry, the memories!
A couple of years before Daddy got
really ill...
all of us had gathered together
over a holiday...
Mom played the piano...we all sang...
Daddy tape recorded us so a copy
could be sent to the folks who could not make it...

and the laughter still rings out
loud and clear...
and every voice
held some promise...

of his legacy.

thank you for the beautiful memory.

lol,  fussing and cussing
I remember it well
from my own family times
though I haven't a single sound
and only two or three photos

from memory I can still listen
and watch from the safety
of my branch in an olive tree
where I would go and stay
when mom got 'that way'

I have read this poem several times throughout the day today. Can just now get through it & reply without seeing blurry words from tears. This is such a special, special poem. Thank you so much for sharing it.
