Passing By Summer

Warm the sun, first to enthrall then vanquish
Paring back the leaves of spring, to sullen husk
Broad yellow faces hung head, to wither
Was it a lie, the warmth that was
Or did the day deceive me in it’s dawning

To hold the crumbling soil in my hands
Though tears will not renew its potential
And I still see the beauty of the first bloom
As I look lovingly back and hold higher
The intent of every hope as falls from the stem
