dancing 'neath the moon

she held within her grasp
a beautiful bouquet
of velvet petaled flowers,
a breathtaking display

curled at the water's edge
on sand warm from the sun,
sunset's reflection in her eyes,
she plucked the petals, one by one.

one for loss and heartache
one for sorrow and for shame
and one for each and every lie
that ever caused her pain

the petals swirled around her
as she released them one by one,
crystal tears shimmered upon her cheeks
in the glow of setting sun

he wrapped an arm around her,
nuzzling her tresses with his nose,
reached into the stem bouquet
producing one carefully hidden rose.

she pulled the flower from his hand
and looked him in the eye
plucking petals as she murmured
"one for every single lie."

he tugged the rose away from her
before she could be through
met her steely gaze and said,
"this one's from me to you."

"I've never meant to give you heartache,
sorrow, loss, or any shame,
but if I have you know that
I will take my share of blame."

"Don't destroy this rose,
my love, and all it represents
based on pain that's in your past
and all the tears you've spent."

"Please know you have my loyalty,
love and devotion, too,
and if you search within your heart
you'll know that this is true."

"You carry bitterness that blinds you
from what is right before your eyes,
your distrust takes what is true
and twists it into lies."

He whispered as he moved to lay
the flower gently in her hands,
"if you stop the petal plucking,
your rose could bloom again."
