like an ironic spring
he lies
in the snow
of a hospital bed

beneath his skin
the bones
are shrunken
April ice

and primal wishes –
older than prayers –
swim
in the growing pools
of his eyes

I kiss
the windswept field
of his forehead
with an
“I love you Dad”
and wonder
if he ever noticed
that I always
call him Bob
except
when I’m afraid

a tender personal moment
allowing yourself to let down
any wall of pretense
