Words and Rain

Only a shadow of the sun now
as rolling clouds darken the sky
and distant thunder rumbles overhead.

Morning doves in the pines
are cooing for a summer rain
as the earth awaits its due…

This type of day beckons memory of you.

The ground thirst for that cooling touch of rain
as does my hearing for your voice
my hands for the touch of you
and my sight for a look from you.

This type of day is your heart singing
and your beautiful eyes gleaming
and your scent the freshness of soft rain
your voice is the wind swaying the trees…

Yet sadness swallows up my heart
and echoes the distance between us
our lives so different and the paths
we have chosen so far apart.

All that we share are words and rain.

A perfect blend of the melancholic human condition in the arms of Nature. And what a compelling last line! I leave this sadly and smelling the approaching rain.
