Not a shout but a roar from the devil within
and the scowl a sign of worship gone wrong
when the puppet dances without any strings
and sings the words he’s unable to hear
through the ears, the heart, the soul, the mind,
or apertures open unto only himself.

And weariness drapes itself like a shroud
over the shoulders of attempted goodwill
doomed from the start, the middle, the end,
and destined to not rise up again.

Down on the ground beaten and bruised
in the company of the try, try again,
you’ll see them there learning, learning,
the bow, the kneel, and the bend and scrape,
but the curtsey, my friends, is too much to take.

They hobble, they grovel, they turn inside out,
but they cannot again stand tall and proud
because futile attempts to make everything right
choking and gagging on the dust of no love.

So still there’s tomorrow like a joker in drag
playing let’s make-believe and dress-up pretend ~
and I close my eyes because I am the weary
and the try, try again, never was a good friend!

Who puts forth such effort?   If there is not REST...it is due to strings.   ::smiles::

Startime - My ardent wish is that you never understand from personal experience.  It's alright and enough that you feel from the written word - thank you for that.

Helen,

I got a chuckle from...

quote:
but the curtsey, my friends, is too much to take.

but, the rest of your poem I found quite serious and quite alarming as I related to the puppet and I thought about how much manipulation or attempted manipulation occures in my daily life on so many different levels.

Enjoyed reading.

Thank you, Dixie!

Bob - Manipulation is an awful thing especially when one knows that it is happening.  The curtsey (the chuckle) is just to show that one doesn't surrender completely but retains an element of ... dignity through it all. Thank you so much for the read.
