Beauty in Verdite

16 June 2006

Beauty in Verdite
like a Chameleon to ponder
A pendent engraved close to her heart
as to jade upon a greenstone of amour

The star of southern Africa
this voice of Afrikaans
Sweet to sorrow, gentle to kind
across a universe of serpentine

Her heart, each pulse blessed
this virginity of mankind
Safe in her manger of tranquil thoughts
protected in ways of soft shade

This symbol of fertility
deep in the valley of Barberton
Crimson hued in her pride of prospective
an African plume born to praise

Verdite is a semi-precious stone found in Zimbabwe which ranges in colour from emerald to
brown. It’s hardness is greater than the hardness of serpentine, making it a challenging
sculpting medium. It is only found in southern Africa, and known deposits are found in the
Barberton district of South Africa, where gold  was first found. Including some of the oldest
outcrops of rock in the world, about 3,500 million years old are found in this South African region.

Generally thought of as deep green in colour, verdite is found in a variety of shades of green,
often mottled with yellow, red, white and light green patches. Verdite is not commonly used
in jewellery - but is an element of African art forms in natural shapes and carved items.

The Barberton Daisy, originating from South Africa is an indigenous plant, the first specimen
of which was sent to England in 1884. The crimson hued “Pride of de Kaap” is another
well-known plant of the region.
