Sorrow’s Void

14 June 2006

Like an angel cast into an Ontarian sun
her hazel eyes a reflection upon joy
Every winter her shadow
those summer’s never to forget

Her happiness all for eyes to want
deep down touching within
This flavour, this nectar
the icing, her frosting to thaw

Lips of ponderance, thoughts to shade pain
A lamplight glowing, her soul at rest in kind

Like an angel cast into an Ontarian sun
in this city of waterfalls, her haven to shelter
Every drop another tear from God’s eyes
His pupils, her sanctuary void of sorrow

The city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, has long been recognized as the “Steel City”.
Although there are at least seventy waterfalls within the city  limits and some of these
waterfalls were well known, no one recognized that no other city of Hamilton’s size contained
so many waterfalls until Jerry Lawton did in 1999 when he introduced the idea of Hamilton
as “The City of Waterfalls”.

The easy access to limestone from the Niagara Escarpment, coal mined in Appalachia,
iron ore mined from the Canadian Shield and export markets through the Great Lakes-Saint
Lawrence system made Hamilton an important iron- and steel-producing city. Diverse steel
works combined to form the Steel Company of Canada in 1910 and the Dominion Steel
Casting Company in 1912.

The escarpment is in many places a 100 metre (330 foot) vertical wall of limestone shale with
many waterfalls and creeks falling over it; including Stoney Creek, Red Hill Creek, Grindstone
Creek, Spencer Gorge Waterfall and Chedoke Creek — flow over the Escarpment and into
Hamilton Harbour. The Hamilton portion of the larger Niagara Escarpment, runs from western
New York to Georgian Bay. It is the world's longest escarpment.

Thank you for the short geography lesson. It's always interesting to learn about other places. Your poem was very well written and sentimental as well. I liked the comparison of God's tears to all the waterfalls in the area. Enjoyed reading.

Thank you for your comments as they are always a blessing.

Given at times I am considered to be arrogant or out of place with my form of poetry and footnotes, and at times pip is one of those places, I am left to wonder if I belong.

While I believe the concept of my footnotes or explanatory notes are an aid to assist the reader with the poem.
