Hoot owl in the orchard,
three nights in a row.
Mama made a list
of family and friends.
Mantle clock stopped
and Papas moving slow.
Hogs are running scared
of the red in the wind.

Better brace yourself
There's gonna be a sad time.
An old crow flew
in the window last night.
Grannys been saying
it sure is a bad sign.
Mamas reading Psalms
by the coal oil light.

Papas dead tired
from toting sugar and corn.
Went to bed sick.
Didn't have an appetite.
Granny got her black veil.
Ready to mourn.
Redbone howled
three times last night.

Sisters in the kitchen
with a chair on one leg.
Spinning it around
like she knows she shouldn't do.
Brothers gone crazy
from eating Mamas nutmeg.
Broke Granny's mirror
with an old horseshoe.

The old hen took to crowin'
Granny grabbed the hatchet.
Doctor came in...
Threw his hat on Daddy's bed.
Mule got out the gate
'cause I forgot to latch it.
Papas got a fever.
Talking out his head.

Uncle Frank slammed the door
Knocked the salt off the shelf.
The hound howled again
So I looked between his ears.
My knees got to shaking
when I saw myself.
I'd best be making plans
to clear away from here.

Give my love to Mary Dawson
Give my love to Peggy Sue
Give my love to Sally Carson
Give my love to Linda Lou
Give my gun to ol' Thad Evan
Give my furs to Bobby Jones
Let my soul go up to Heaven
Let the mountain have my bones.

Oh my..now this made me smile..
seeing all the old superstitions,
a lot of them I had forgotten.
Thanks for jogging my memory with this one.
Much enjoyed the read.
Hugs~Nancy

I enjoyed the old time feel of this, with papa and granny and Peggy Sue.
