what shadows drifted through the soul
of that hunched, squatting beast,
beating a stick on the ground
with his tightly clenched fingers,
a gleam of atomic proportions
already in his eye...

he sought comfort in the crackling flame
as he had done for thousands of years -
but the dancing tips were blithe spirits,
unconcerned with his predicament..
and he raised his eyes to the stars,
perhaps they would offer answers -

and now he has gone there...
he has come far, that primeval beast
of the grassy plains —
yet, he still stares into the flames;
he still tests the stick, in all its forms,
and pounds his chest over a vanquished foe...

so far “intelligence” has eluded him —
though it’s just within his grasp...

just beyond the stick...
