after
the umbilical
noose

after
the curfews
of childhood

after
the bulletholes
of love

after
the cage
of career

after
the chains
of family

after
the parole
of retirement

after
the execution
of time

I will
lie
in the cell
of my casket

my body
rigid
to attention

except
for my hands
that grasp
each other
peacefully
like strangers
who have drowned
together

Holy friggin damn!  Ok, I know that I retired that word - but your poetry always deserves a damn!  Your name is always one of the first I look for here - you are gifted in your expression.
Powerful ending - excellent imagery.

When I grow up I want to write like you

Melissa~

Intellectually I know that Canada is no better than any other country. Emotionally I KNOW that Canada is the best country in the world!
