In your life
incrementally chosen for privilege,
with selected fields
that need no vision,
no definitions or substance,
on grounds of frozen expectations,
I leave you without desire.

You have found your most prized collection,
little hiding places
petite palaces
where no one’s serious talk will sound the depths of your existence,
where your passions and your causes
at best
wallow in shallows created
any time you choose to turn your radiance upon the natives
clamoring along the empty shoreline
momentarily allowing it to thaw,
when it is convenient
to wear feelings,
those selected carefully
in matching livery of artificial social attitude
also finely chosen
for affect.

Make no mistake,
like you
my early years were all about survival,
we both learned to sell ourselves
for money
for oblivion
for comfort
for pride
or because we sometimes just enjoyed the ride;
now that my life
is history mostly,
I’ve come of late not to believe in destiny
nor in fate,
though I can’t deny the role of chance,
nor of real magic,
choice
is now the only dance that makes any sense to me;
so I choose
to bear you no malice
nor ill will.

I have lived more than half my life,
though living in the open,
still running from shadows to shade
working hard to pay debts I earned
too many years before you were born,
not to read and understand
the footprints of the devils in the details
of the choices I have made,
nor to shed the remnants of the dead
without apology,
a lesson clearly failed in my delivery.

It is simply sad that we are so out of sync
in what we each chose,
learned,
know,
think.

Oh, this is such a bittersweet treat from your heart's pen. I love reading you, even when it hurts.

A choice that gives honor to the person you have become.

Yes, very powerful piece, icebox.  Makes me feel sad for all of us in this out of sync dance of life where the trick is to choose wisely.
