Beneath the northern stars

Her life had finally settled down
And things were going fine.
If it was not so perfect
We would have seen some sort of sign.
She seemed so very happy
So how were we to know
The sadness she was feeling
If she didn't let it show?

Not once did she let on that things
In her life weren't all that grand.
If she had taken off her mask
Then we could understand.
She seemed a whole new person
So how were we to know
The sadness she was feeling
If she didn't let it show?

She sent out silent cries for help-
We knew not what they meant.
Her life had turned around and so
We thought she was content.
As I look back and think awhile
We really should have known
The sadness she was feeling
From the hints that she had shown.

Her mask is taken off now
We can finally see her face
It's been revealed much too late
For now she's in a better place.
She couldn't stay a minute longer-
That we could not know-
But we should have seen the sadness
That she had tried so hard to show.

I hope someday you get the chance to live like you were dying....

Sometimes I think people live in denial..and do see the signs but don't wish to  admit it or get involved until it is too late. A good write.

When people give up, and give in..
it is a very sad day, indeed.
So many of us have, at one time or another
skirted this very fine line of choice...

I am sorry the lady in your writing
decided she couldn't handle it all.

Well done, little one.

Thank you both, nakdthoughts and Sunshine, for reading and replying. This poem is actually one of my earliest ones, from 1999. I was inspired to write it after reading an article about Princess Diana which stated that she may have suffered from a mental illness (borderline personality disorder). Right after she died, all the articles about her talked about how happy she finally was and how her life was so much better than it had ever been before. Then it came out that she really wasn't all that happy, but it was too late to help her. I hope you both had a wonderful Memorial Day!
