Words and Thorns

28 May 2006

An empty shadow
this shaded thorn
A rose to prick
protection an anomaly

Such passion, solemn pain
an open book, pages crinkled
Torn away at flesh
blood droplets fallen

Under the blossom
the highlight of a bud
New birth, growth of yesterday
maybe another sunlight to reflect

For what was a minute
time accounted for lost
Ode to that liaison
the days words and thorns met

Myrrh was used in the preparation of a holy ointment in ancient times, of the biblical period;
in the purification of women as a perfume; and for embalming. It was obtained from various
thorny shrubs of the dry districts of Arabia and eastern Africa. (myrrh is the gum of the rock rose.)

Myrrh is a resin (dried tree sap) that come from Commiphora (or myrrh tree) which
are common to Somalia and the eastern parts of Ethiopia.

The sap of a number of other Commiphora and Balsamodendron species are also known
as myrrh, including that from Commiphora erythraea (sometimes called East Indian myrrh),
Commiphora opobalsamum and Balsamodendron kua. Its name is derived from the
Hebrew: murr or maror, meaning “bitter”.

Myrrh is currently used in some liniments, healing salves that may be applied to abrasions
and other minor skin ailments.
