I Never Knew

I didn't know
that the inevitable
would hurt so much.

I've been preparing for years
but you're never really prepared.

I never knew that the truth
would burn so bad
would be so devastating and so final.

I never knew I would want so much
ache so much
and wait for so long
for something
I can never have.

No one ever told me
that I would pay the cost
for daring to pick up a paintbrush
instead of the chains
daring to birth new being
in canvas and oil
spreading myself thin
though lush full
with faith and hope;
Only later to drip the lies
on white turned gray.

I cry broken tears
in a field of broken dreams,
this heart is paper, leprosy torn
and without the wind, it cannot fly.

I never knew I would
lose so much
for something
I can never have.

Love.

In the above, I am fascinated by the sustained metaphor in which the self is the paint and the paint is the self.

We never know
until we dare...

You keep doing
what you do...

after all, it's
your heart
and your soul
you're caring for.

Your poem touches me dear Lady:

"I never knew I would
lose so much
for something
I can never have."

BELIEVE:

You never will lose anything for something you can't have, only for something you never tried.

don't ask me how I know, but,

my words are true and I haven't told you a thing that your soul already knows!
