Standing so forlorn
gruff gnarly's broken spirit
shows upon his face
distant noises faint but clear
sound of chain saws drawing near.

Nancy....such a fine old gent...with character grown from all those years....sad, the sound of the chain saw coming near. Such a vivid and haunting poem.  Love the pic!

Old Gnarly is a beaut !

Is this true?  Did they cut this tree down?

Nancy, this was beautiful, both your words and picture...

Please tell us the story...

I appreciate everyone's interest in old gnarly.
He lives in a Provincial Park about an hours drive from my home.
Each time we go there I have to go visit with him.
I don't believe they will ever cut him down..they had better not!
If I recall it is a very old weeping willow but I will have to confirm that.
I will say, he is my most favourite tree in the entire Park.
At times I actually think he grins when he sees me coming.

I love this!   Thank you for this!

The morning glory that blooms so briefly and Old Gnarly that has stood for years...both have the same heart.  You and he share that heart also.  He grins.  ::smiles::   Oh, How he grins!

Wonderful write!

ok gals, here is the plan:
we chain ourselves to this'un,
stop the saws dead in their tracks
shouting:
Long live old gnarly!
Only the master gardener of the universe should
be permitted to end what grows within
the likes of such a beauty.
LOL...but I'm not kidding!

Old Gnarly is beautiful! Thank you dear Nancy for honoring him with your words. Hope your thoughts of saws didn't scare him though! Hug him next time and comfort him.
He must live!

Love and hugs.

There is something about an aged bu still captivating tree that holds us all.  Thanks for sharing this beauty with us.  Hugs, Ken

What character Old Gnarly has.  His features are very wooden, but expressive none the less.  LOL  Awesome tree!  I hope they never cut him down, either...definitely no chain saw massacres allowed.

Delightful poem, Nancy

Thank you all for your comments on Old Gnarly.
I'd like to think he is standing a little prouder tonight
after all these wonderful replies.
And, yes, I do believe he is smiling as well.
Believe me..they will have to get past me to cut old gnarly down!!
Thanks again, hugs and luv to you all.

I had to revisit this again...I suppose, due to the lighting, Old Gnarly to me, looks like one of those trees in Lord of the Rings...yanno?  Cool, Nancy, and thanks much for the story...
and yes, he is smiling...watch it, or he'll pick you up and carry you far far away to the inner world....

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love this one Nancy. All the replies should be printed out, put into a plastic sleeve and left where people can read and the powers who can decide when this tree will be dropped can read and rethink the project. Is there an entrance  with an information  place to the park ? Just my thoughts.love the tree and your poem.. martyjo

It pains me to see a tree felled. Trees have feelings too and I can only imagine how terrifying it must be for our arboured friends when they hear the sounds of a chain saw as it draws near...

A poignant post!

With love from someone who hugs trees,
