She gave to him her aching heart
He gave to her his bleeding soul
As each did turn and walk away
before they heard the drummer’s roll.

For war’s waiting around the bend
where muskets fired and bullets flew.
And from the moment of their depart
they left behind their letters two.

The words did ache, as tears did flow
and hands did pull sadly away.
For each did grieve the thought of death
as eyes were closed, what could they say?

Oh cast to them their liberty
and take not these two from this earth
For each has walked a ragged mile
two souls in search a nation’s birth.

Wow. This is beautiful. I love that it tells such an intricate story in so few words.

Barry, very touching words...as I lived these many years ago...and was thankful for my positive ending.

Marge, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed
this poem....one could become much inspired
by what you have given us.  Thanx MT...
If I even came 'close' to inspiring this with my 'Dearest Love' ... then I rejoice in being your poet-friend~
And if not ... then I rejoice anyhow~

Beautifully done, sir poet~

Enjoyed the read, Magnus - and down through the ages there is always war to tear people apart.  Makes one think that we're not very bright.

Be still my heart. This is so sadly beautiful what a picture you have painted in my mind. Thanks for sharing
