Country Girl

I remember a little country girl,
from a long time ago.
She's left this old world now,
but she lives on in my soul.

I can still see those big brown eyes,
smiling so admiringly,
at the little country boy,
that was me.

I wish I could go back,
and change a lot of things.
The memory of that country girl,
still tugs at these heart strings.

We were just to young I guess,
to fully understand,
that life don't always go,
as it's planned.

I left home at eighteen,
to defend our liberty.
I forgot that little country girl,
and she forgot me.

When I came home again,
feeling like a man.
I went to ask a country gent,
for his daughter's hand.

I was met at the door,
by a little boy of three.
But that little boy,
didn't look nothing like me.

His momma stood behind him,
with a tear in her eye.
That's the last time I saw her,
we didn't even say goodbye.

.

I can, and do, cry at stories like this and it doesn't matter whether real or make-believe because it's still sad.  Life - yeah, Life!!

I had to chuckle when I read this poem because it's so true to life. I watched my brother do the exact same thing.

Sounds like a heart-tuggin' country song to me! Very moving!

Steve...time moves on doesn't it....sometimes without our even realizing it, until a moment like this.  So good!

He or She who hesitates is lost

Times are often more important than feelings, and the time of feelings often takes the place of romance

Yes I can relate to these words

Me too, Steve.  You should buy shares in Kleenex!  I loved the country feel to this and just wanted even the fiction in this not to be "true"!

How sad. What a curve ball that must have been, and it stays with you forever.

I sure like the way you portray
Real life in your poetry.
And this could be another song
