EXHILARATION
August 1999

Even the dull can marvel at tornadoes, sportsmen and fast cars.
Have you sensed the tumult of a drowning fly?
Or sped up your vision
to see the colours of a butterfly between wing movements?
Or been stunned by the liquid elegance of a snake flowing through the grass?
Have you fine-tuned your ear to the minstrelsy of the spoken word
or been swept away by a musical passage?
Or been haunted by a painting?
Or the texture of material, or the bark of a tree?
Have you really smelled a Crimson Glory?
Have you let it’s sweetness permeate your lungs
and nestle in your olfactory memory
to recall at will
over and over again?
What happens when ice-cream slithers down your throat?
Do you only taste it or do all your senses shout?
It is not the adventurous who continually need to seek thrills and spills and Everests to climb.
It is those whose senses are dead.
For those with abundant life,
the world around is screaming its excitement.

OH Diana!
This is a wonderful write!
Everyone should use all their senses to enjoy life to the fullest!
When certain enjoyments give me a special thrill,
I put them in my 'memory bank' to pull out and relive time and time again.
This is indeed a keeper!
Hugs, Nancy

Diana....how did you do that?  Say exilharation just right about so many things...I just love this poem!

A stunning write, Diana!  The "world around" is indeed a beautiful place but perhaps not many bother to stop and really look.

Oops, Kacy!  You must have replied while I was replying to Nancy and Martie.

Oh, YES!  Enjoying a dandelion (or a dandy lion!) counts!  Most deffffffffffffinitely!

The most simple of things
can exhilarate those who
care to experience a moment
with their senses...

and you've done a fine job
in reminding us to stop...
look, touch, listen...

and all of the other sensations
will soon follow...

Well done, m'dear.

We take so many wonderful things for granted. Have you ever just sat silently in a flower patch watching a bee gather nectar? Calmly Exilharating!

this was beautiful...although, I gotta say, I can't find any beauty in a snake...and I know I'm the one missing out...but truly fear them...

anyway, what a delightful read...

Thank you Karilea, Kate, Chris, Dixie, Rainbowdust, Lee and Earth Angel.  I am glad you all enjoyed it.

It's my pleasure, Kate and Rainbowdust.

No, I haven't, Chris, but I can imagine the excitement.  I have watched sunbirds sipping nectar from a tree just outside my lounge window, but it must be so much more exilharating watching a tiny bee doing the same, especially if you are sitting in the same flower patch.

I wish I lived near you, Lee - or rather that you lived near me because I don't know much, if anything, about American snakes.  I am almost certain I could teach you not to fear snakes, and even to love them - even if only from a certain distance!

Earth Angel, I loved your little pictures of an owl, an angel and the little blue flowers with the little yellow butterfly - and not least, your wonderful compliments!

I often worry about money (though it bores me to death, I sorta need it now and then and I have to work very hard to get it), but tonight (on 3-talk, Honeybunch, in case you read this)I saw a woman on TV for whom I feel the deepest pity.  She is 20 and is married to a man of 50 and has 600 pairs of shoes and 8 cars (and in South Africa, the cheapest car is quite expensive!) and has a very shallow outlook on life and a terribly distorted sense of values.  I fear for her happiness.  I am 60 and I have never got used to how lucky I am - how healthy I am, how happy I am (in spite of a lot of things) and how delighted I am with what I have and how few things there are that I have every wanted that I didn't have.
