she sits quietly on the porch
fiddling with the hem of her dress
tired brown eyes strain to see the horizon
then focus on the ground
mind long since gone to dust
some jewels still shine
in the corners

my mama used to call me Lady Grace
said my daddy spoiled me rotten
         bringing me loaf bread
         and co’cola
         they both layin’
         up in the graveyard now
         nobody to spoil me

         had me a husband once
         can’t remember his name
         mealy mouthed fool
never could keep up with me

         had me some young’uns too
         all gone now
still little birds can’t hang around
         with they mouths open
         forever
         makes a mama tired

she drops the hem of her dress
pulls a cigarette from behind her ear
and lights up
jerking her head toward the building behind her

won’t let you smoke inside there
         gotta sit on the porch
         summer and winter
         rain or shine
         and they call this a
         home
         ain’t no home of mine

         ah well
         I sure am tired
         ain’t no call for me
         to sit around here
wait for somebody ain’t never comin’
Lady Grace don’t wait for nobody

I’m goin’ in and get me some rest
         I might take a notion
         to go on down yonder
         after awhile
and grab me an armful of freight train

Dear Lady,

And jewels are glowing through your words.  Yes, where there is life there is hope.  Maybe that should be turned around: where there is hope there is life even for this one ready to hobo a freight train.

I can't say which I fell in love with more...the bittersweet reality of Lady Grace, or the striking splendor of your ability to tell it!
AWESOME!

Great job, Lady.....:-)

This is not only a poem, but a could be song.
A bluegrass or mountain tune...use the second stanza as the refrain...indeed it has the soul for it.... just a thought.

For some strange reason, this reminded me of "Fried Green Tomatoes."

Does life ever turn out the way we think it should?

Wonderful read.

Thank you for your understanding reply FNG.

And a great thought it is too ice. Thanks for your response and idea.

“A bouquet of humanity.” What a nice thing to say Sy.

Wonderful question Susan. “Does life ever turn out the way we think it should?”
