The Late Unpleasantness

I was old enough to go to war
I was old enough to die
I shed my blood on a foreign shore
Though I wasn't sure exactly why

I was spat upon for my loyalty
I was made to feel the blame
By those who avoided the lottery
And hid in self-righteous shame

They became the captains of industry
And traded idealism for greed
I sold my medals of gallantry
The day I checked into Walter Reed
