The center
sound
reasonable
cautious
filled with hope
hovers still
above
the room
the oak wainscot
dinged
from abrupt chairs
attempts to look brilliant
our eyes meet
in a hush
suitcases packed full
of our stuff and your clothes
sit boldly at the door
your hand hesitantly moves
towards the brass knob
tears
dry
clinging to the corners
of my eyes
watch in careful silence
the center
holding it all together
builds pressure
a manic clock
ticks
echoing in our calm
the sofa large and inviting
sulks with memories
your headache seems to grow
standing 20 feet apart
a hallway longer than I remembered
puts us at a distance to hard to
overcome
withered
flowers, resting on the hall table
beg
for attention
I see you
Instead
the center
chasing your feet out the door
falls desperately
as the doors
shuts

We always wanted children
