Stilted and enclosed
I hold myself in
with arms too long used
for embracing the world
and never self.
While hands too used to helping
and not being helped
clasp frantically together
to stop their trembling;
for I am a rock,
silent,
unyielding,
and as cold as stone

A heart, fearful
old and near dead
lies within, pierced by pain
and yet hidden by a smile
that shows nothing but
perfect acceptance
perfect serenity.
While the mind
screams NO!
in silent protest
at the injustices of life

Sleeplessness
carries me through the night
and the stillness
of darkness,
allows me freedom
to unbend;
and cry bitter tears
of anxiety
and guilt
for all the could haves,
should haves, would haves
but never did

If I could,
I would throw off
the shroud of conformity
that binds me
confines me
to patterns unchangeable
learned long ago

As day begins
I wind myself in the grave clothes
that suffocate me, subdue me,
to cosset function and form
that is stilted and enclosed
...as I am -  in mute point

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Ouch, Kethry!  I feel your pain and loneliness and imprisonment so very clearly in this.

However, you are wrong (in the penultimate stanza).  You CAN "throw off the shrouds of conformity / that binds (you) / confines (you) / to patterns (NOT) unchangeable / learned long ago" - if only you want to enough.

Enjoyed your poem, but not your pain.

You are one fine poetess with one fine poetic and sensitive soul.

You owe it to yourself to be as good to you as you are to others. Perhaps then you will be able sleep the sleep of a baby.

Those loving arms of yours are so long now from encircling others that they are good for wrapping themselves around you a google of times!

I'm into self love! At least then we know that we are being appreciated by at least one person! ~ Our self!

Giving you a big, warm hug,

Oh, lady... I swear I was trying to scream quietly... how did you hear me all the way 'round the world? *S*
This is powerful and passionate... and fantastic! *S*

very good. We, the lot of us seem to understand. So know that you are not alone. We have to make our own hacksaws and learn to use them. best to you, martyjo
