you know her life story
you have heard it over and over
girl meets boy meets boy meets boy
somehow
it never worked
and of course
she isn’t really a girl anymore

loving words whisper themselves
through the kitchen
take space among the dining chairs
momentarily pass through the bedroom
and the tangled sheets
into her ears
out the window
wafting north on an evening draft

still she knows the answer
if she had a window seat
with frothy pink cushions
she would sit
Audrey Hepburn style
knees to chin
far-flung look
on a fixed star
music rising to a crescendo
in her ears
and a knock would come
door would fling open
love would walk in
take her in its arms
and call back the loving words
she’s seen it happen a hundred times

but she has no window seat
never has had
she must live
by Snow White rules

A grain of poetry suffices to season a century.

An excellent poem (as always) showing your detailed, accurate and deep observation of human nature.  Sadly what you say about her is only too true.

Often when I read your poems, Kate, I think how well you probably would have directed movies(or is it produced? - I mean controlling and guiding how the actors act).  Writing the script too, for that matter.  But perhaps, you have realised that yourself, seeing that you are so observant.

Your standard seems never to slip.

And your reply is wonderful as usual Diana. Funny you should mention producing/directing. I have always told my children (and now grandchildren) that life is an operetta and we take turns producing and directing. I must admit, I tend to hog the producer director role myself. I think you had already guessed that.

Thank you Sir Sy for your reply. Very nice kiss.

Morning Lady,
I'm so glad you found my writings and left a kind word, or it would have taken too long to find yours!
Truly, I have just spent an early Saturday, cup o' joe in hand, reading your words, and I could have picked any and all of your poems to leave comment on...I just happen to be here.
They are all equally amazing in picture, rythm, and I hear and echo of a low pitched humming when I read them (I think it's Amazing Grace:0).
"Maddie" should have a childrens book built around it,
"Graces"
I’m goin’ in and get me some rest
         I might take a notion
         to go on down yonder
         after awhile
and grab me an armful of freight train"
is a testament to a life still freely lived.
I could continue for ALL of them I've read, because they are all equally stunning, and I'm so glad I started my morning off with them today, Thank you, and please continue.

p.s. I have a shot of a little dark haired autistic girl dancing on a plastic yellow picnic table with a tiara on her head and a puppy in her arms, barefoot. It's called Maddies Dance, and it is a skewed version of your Maddie, because everything about her is slightly crooked, even her smile

Ella! What a gift you have left me this morning. I feel truly honored that you have taken the time to read and reply to my work so fully.

I am glad I found your work for I have greatly enjoyed it. I would love to see your picture of Maddie's Dance.

Kate

We must have spent several decades
dreaming alike...

Well done, Kate...
