Can Two Islands Collide?

Image hosting by Photobucket

We are just messages in bottles
floating out on the tide
from one shore to the other,
waiting for islands to collide.

Maybe heaven is our guide.

I know the earth moves
and seismic activity exists
but I don't know where we're at
on these continental drifts?

Maybe I should be content with rifts.

"but I don't know where we're at

Very nicely written.

But if you need to ask...
Well...

passing shadows, I love your poem.  You ponder some important issues.  That is a beautiful picture too.

I am 60 years old and am learning something new every day, partly because, like you in your poem, I have always asked myself questions and tried to answer them as objectively as possible, (except for very few which I consciously am not prepared to ask, or if I did, I would answer subjectively, but that is a choice, and those I don't regret).

My answers change as I learn and grow, but what I do know, is that as wonderful as it is to have a partner to share wonders and pain with, we don't all always have somebody (and that I only really know in hindsight), and if we only live while we do, some of us won't live much or at all.  It is what you do with your life (inwardly and outwardly) when you don't have a partner that determines your path and what Life will give back to you.  That is not a pessimistic view.  It is, in fact, a very optimistic view.

I have a philosophy of thinking along the lines of "If the worst comes to the worst, then I will . . . ".  It is a way of taking precautions and if you are prepared for the worst, then you are prepared even more for the best!

May you soon find somebody really worthy of such a good, kind, gentle, wise person, but, if it takes a while, be good and kind and gentle and wise to yourself in the meantime - which I am sure (especially in the light of most of your latest poems) you are doing very well without my interference!

"Maybe I should be content with rifts."

I think to have a successful relationship with another human being we must first realize that they are human. You certainly don't have to be content with all the rifts but,...we all got em. :-)A thinking poem PS, I like! :-)

I readily understand these lonely musings, but even tides, Dear Heart, are not random.  What ever islands your message incurs, let them be peaceful and sustaining.  They may chain or just be pieces of a larger mosaic.

If you wait, one heck of a lot of kelp and plastic cups will wash ashore before your island arrives....if you don't, then only half as much of it will slosh up on your beach, because you're drifting in that other island's direction while it comes your way.....

Take care though....such a meeting is how the Himalayas were formed....

wow! I thank each of you from my heart.
This is an old one of mine and I wasn't quite sure what kind of frame of mind I was in when I wrote it. Funny how you can go back to the old ones and wonder what they mean after years have passed. I'm glad to know what you guys thought of it and your feedback has been wonderful!!

Thank you passing shadows.  I was a little afraid that I was too meddling.  I knew you would know that I meant well, but that isn't always enough.  I used to be a schoolteacher and it is in my nature to try to help, but sometimes one can hurt even though meaning well, if one doesn't think carefully enough about how the recipient will feel about what you are saying, and then only great harm can be done.  I usually try to restrain myself in this regard.  I am happy that you were touched by my response, and very glad that I didn't interfere too much (or hope I didn't!).

"Maybe I should be content with rifts."

Never, never passing shadows! Collide and see what happens.

I love this poem on so many levels. Mr. Donne tells us, "no man is an island" yet the Bee gees say, " islands in the stream, that is what we are."
I like the way you tell it.

sweetberry, thank you so much for leaving your thoughts and reading so many of my poems. I'm touched that you enjoy them.

Kate, thank you for such an uplifting comment! I enjoy your encouragement and support.

Diana, I am always open to "meddling" LOL. I have selected more positive poems to post here since I've been back, but you will see in future postings that maybe I really don't have my stuff together as much as it may seem. Everyone can use a helping hand now and then...a heart outreaching...so please never feel as though you are stepping over the line with me. I thank you for being here and being the caring woman you are.

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....i hope you dance.

Much love to you Dixie! If u're ever on yahoo msg me..I'm always an email away..

If at first you don't succeed destroy all the evidence that you tried.
