ALIENATION
1994

The thick carpet of their silence grew between them
And grew
And grew
And grew so tall that it enveloped them.
Their glassy eyes could just make out
the vague shape that was the other,
disappearing into a sea of beige.
They felt the tentacles of woollen pile
reaching for their throats and
slowly,
oh so slowly,
the carpet of their silence constricted them
until their thrashing arms dropped to their inert sides
and they were as dead as their malunion.

A very painful poem Diana, but so well written. It clung to my throat.

passing shadows, I'm sorry you've been there and done that, but warmly happy that you made it through.  Thank you for your kind words.
JL, yes it is.  I believe it could have been different, but it just simply wasn't.

Thank you Kate.  Yes, it is a pity that this (and Goodbye) were written to the same man as My All was written.  A case of the disintegration of a relationship.  On second thoughts, it is probably more accurate to say that My All was an illusion - or close to one.  What was particularly painful was that it took some years to fall apart.  But I am much tougher and more resilient than I look or sound.
