“He who sings prays twice."

            ~St. Augustine

the doors of Our Lady of Lourdes
embraces us
a Holy Mother

choir wears purple
and gold
double sway
right right
middle middle
left left
I will live in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life

church mother
red flannel greatcoat
soft jowls meeting collar
enfolds us with loaves of bread
sign of brotherhood
wrinkled finger to lips
shush
wayward whispers
     Christ has died

tiny girl
just up off the floor
slips the moorings of her daddy’s arms
welcomed
in the second pew
she pats her starfish hands
smiles her freedom smile
at Daddy
oh
that freedom smile will one day
break his heart
    Christ is risen

lean priest from Savannah
passionate
lifts the host
    Lord I am not worthy
    the body of Christ
    amen
wipes the plate of crumbs
licking thin fingers
cup of cheer and sorrows
    Christ will come again

we ask
we seek
we knock
      Christ have mercy

Ruth steps forward
from under an angel’s wing
white robe
sun washed southern face
joy rising
she sings
pain gone to sweetness
taste and see the goodness of the Lord

church mother
holds her coat tighter
smiles
nods
it is her right
her obligation
fugitive baby girl listens
mouth open
as if to catch the notes
Daddy feels his heart clutch
in love
and we are knit as one
     peace be with you

members in their finest
travelers in weary garments
those who search the streets
in same day shirts
hearts of the people
here
and gone
open
take up the cry
pass it
one to another
     behold the Lamb of God

Fantastic, the quantity of quality here is remarkable, but the gems are in the subtle descrptive oservations and nuances within movement, like this...
''slips the moorings of her daddys arms''..very good...thank you..

Goldenrose.

Kate, what a beautiful and unusual poem!  And Ruth's voice!  I heard it, note by pure silver note, through your words!  No wonder, it had the effect that it did in your poem.  Thank you for the link too.

I loved this, but mostly this caught my heart

tiny girl
just up off the floor
slips the moorings of her daddy’s arms
welcomed
in the second pew
she pats her starfish hands
smiles her freedom smile
at Daddy
oh
that freedom smile will one day
break his heart
    Christ is risen

a beautiful write and poem...very much enjoyed the articulate visuals...wonderful!!!

WindWalker, thank you for your kind words.

Thank you Diana. I tried so hard to portray Ruth’s voice. The last announcement that morning was that she has been accepted to the Boston Conservatory.

Thank you so much LeeJ. I appreciate your reply.

That is wonderful news, but I am not in the least surprised after hearing her sing through your poem!

After a few readings, I have to go with LeeJ's quote because I know how freedom smiles can break a heart.  Excellent writing!
