Time gets away from me.
Leaving me sad that so much
hasn’t been done.
Funny how life can change our dreams
without us even realizing
we never had the means.

Regardless, I continue to learn.
Sometimes profound,
sometimes not so much.
People, things, come and go from life.
At times it hurts, but somehow it’s always what’s right.

The ones that end up here to stay
are the ones that meant the most anyway.

“When everyone else fails you it’s your family that will remain,”
said he, who would slur the words my way.
Not that he was the best source of knowing what love really means.
Sometimes hurting beyond belief, he was unfailingly loyal
to our family.

Odd, that he could be cold and yet worry so.
“Don’t want all my eggs in one basket,” he would tell me,
with that concerned wave of shaky hand,
when I was too small to really understand.

Older, I get it now and feel the fear of the words he spoke.
Generations in one car, hopes of not too far, I now agree.
At times, I am convinced the stress is going to kill me.

Yet at night,

when those generations are all tucked in
I hear whispered words of love,

“All my eggs are safe again”

Thank you for honouring us with a peek into your innermost thoughts.  I may be wrong, but I think that you are saying that it was your mom who asked you to try to warm to your father.  You are a good, kind person.

and yes, home? We carry it around with us.

Once we figure that out too, better start packin'.

Live light, Sweet Susan. It makes uphills easier.

Love ya lady and thank you.

there is more then just a beautiful story behind this.....it has beautiful meaning as well....hugsss you...

And so it those we live with
and should know who elude us
But we can still love them
we can love completely
without complete understanding

Love claims its own...

We come to grips with life on its terms, but perhaps it really does give us what we ask of it.  I see in your words the way I feel...with the addtional obervation that family is not always just those who are realted by blood, but the friend, too, with whom we bond heart-to-heart.

I love how this poem concludes, and will count myself blessed to gather those eggs remaining into my basket at the end, too.
Beautiful!

Enjoyed Susan, it set me to reflecting back a few years upon my own family. We sure went through some tough times but as daddy used to say" Blood is thicker than mud.":-)

Thank you all for the replies...

Of course I had no intention of writing at all let alone this..but a gentle push by someone special always has the power to put pen in my hand..
