She often walked along the tracks,
a husband and child to feed,
to the tiny store and home once more;
with goods that they would need.
Her son in school...
Perhaps...
Somehow...
He'll find a better way.
An easier life...
less toil, less strife...
For that, she'd often pray.
Her man...
A man with blackend hands,
blackend face and blackend lungs;
who managed to carry his age with grace,
for one so old, so young.
His labor showed in mind and soul.
It showed in height and width and girth.
Daily, he dug their precious coal
from the dark bowels of the earth.

She thought of him as she stepped along
in route to the little store.
The tracks had been the shortest path
She'd walked it many times before.
But suddenly things felt different...
Something was not the same...
She wonderered at the strangeness...
and then she heard her name...
"Lucille", the voice called aloud.
With no house for near a mile.
No bush or ditch for one to hide.
She shook it off and smiled.
"Imagination or perhaps the wind."
"But, something is wrong I feel !"
And once again the voice cried out...
She shook at the sound.... "Lucille !"

Turning back, she headed home...
She could not tell you why.
She could not explain what caused her pain
or what brought tears to her eyes.
She wept !       She ran !     Her heart beat fast !
Her breathing quick and hard !
Her legs grew weak as she neared the house
and the truck parked in the yard.

There...
two men stood by a fallen friend...
A form beneath a sheet.
They searched in vain for fitting words
as she moaned at his feet.
How it happened...
They could not say.
It seemed the tunnel had just gave way.
A timber cracked and they heard a yell...
He called her name as the ceiling fell.

You are a tremendous story teller, Uriah...this is a sad one.  It is so true though, sometimes our intuition must be obeyed.  *hugs*.....jo

I love your poems and stories too .. they ring so true ... and I relate to this one too (lol, I do) ... it's true ... when we are close to one who passes, premonitions and intuitions, though unexplained, are real and bring us to a place where no time passes, time stands still for a moment ... and we connect with them and on some level, aware of their goodbyes and our steadfast urge to not let go. I know .. cause this happened to me too, when my husband had to go. ((hugs))
