A Sheepish Argument

13 November 2003

To some it could be said
behind every major invention
of the world a New Zealander would be
As if not by a coincidence in the midst of
an outcome time changing in a resulted sea

Which for a country with a population
greater in sheep than man
The adulation was that
of course “Kiwi’s can”

From mankind's small step
to a giant leap in faith
There was little reason for
those New Zealand born to be
ever humble and misplaced

Living in a land where
the world was a capital away
To do an overseas experience
and perhaps return home some day

While others would remain
further in the field
Enhancing a dream
and a desire to yield

In a consequence of having
placed a rocketship in space
Making a discovery of
atomic proportions even to displace

Whether in Florida or Houston bound
Or in locations apart from
the United States of America found

Of greater skies conquered in flight
Over controversy to the true beginnings
yet credited to the brothers Wright

How man had learnt to fly and the
likelihood was in New Zealand this
may well have been done first
By a man his critics considered
somewhat crazy in his airy thirst

So the quest was for the rest to look and see
this concept of behind many
main events of world growth
A New Zealand birth was celebrated
in having pipped the post

In his role as director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in California in the United States of America. William Haywood Pickering [born in Wellington New Zealand in 1910 and educated at Wellington College and the California Institute of Technology] was a key figure in the launching of the first successful US earth satellite, Explorer 1, and in subsequent US space exploration. To have began his association with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1944 and remained involved right up to death in March 2004.

Earnest Rutherford (1871-1937) later Baron Rutherford of Nelson was in his time known as a great physicist and a scientist of international acclaim. Born at Brightwater, near Nelson in New Zealand to a Scottish heritage, Rutherford was educated in New Zealand at Nelson Collage and Canterbury University. Where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts [BA] in 1892 and a Master of Arts [MA] with honours in both mathematics and physics in 1893. He taught at Christchurch Boys’ High School for a year, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science [BSc] in 1894. Before going on to be omitted to the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England in 1895. Where his initial works had some association with radio transmissions prior to advancing into the field of radiology. Where he was credited with being the Father of the Atomic Age along with the role of splitting the atom.

In March 1903 Richard William Pearce was reported to have achieved motorised flight almost six months before the Wright Brothers in the USA.
