Letting Go

Yesterday I let a poem go.
I don’t know when, but somewhere
teetering out along the cusp of words
under the deep unworded burden they ride
and the somewhere doesn’t matter at all
what matters is, I didn’t write,
didn’t care enough, want enough,
wasn’t yearning for it this time.

I can say this in my defense; I did hold them
for a long time, cupped my mental hands
around their warm newness
cherished them like virgin breasts
but that was all, and eventually I let go.

It’s not the first time.
There were years when no words came from me,
then years when no words came at all;
and yet the poems came still,
aligned silent in theedges, signs and pictures
hints of words that I could feel,
until I relented, began again.

Until that moment yesterday;
the poem isn’t gone and I wish it were.
The unfilled shape of it fills me with a void,
joining the other thousand empty shapes in me,
each one still calling, calling, but the words –
the words are gone.

I know this feeling, as you know...and I'm very sorry to hear that you do too.  I will mourn your words, and hope in the hope of my own words, that they will return.

Ed~
This one touches me so very tenderly today ... as just yesterday I was cleaning out some mementos and fingering the remembers of a dearest friend of some forty plus years ... then this morning I received notice that she had passed into the loving arms of her Savior~

Cherishing the words that she penned to me over the years ... and this *gift* from you makes me realize even more just why I hold onto all the mementos of love~

Thank you dear friend ... for even without knowing ... you knew~

Asking that you please hold the loving family of Patricia Barr in prayer vigil as they mourn the loss of wife and mother~

Hi Ed ... it is so hard to let go. Each syllable, each word, each whisper comes from the heart of a poet.

I truly understand and hold onto everything.

I've been able to retrieve two things from it...there was a house, country I think, and there were feet somehow. Not much to go on, but it's a start.....

Oh, that's an excellent beginning. A country house, feet... I want to read this poem. Looks like we're going to get two poems! By the way, I love the original.

And such a loss to you is a tremendous loss to us all!!! *S*

This is beautiful, my friend... even as it aches with what could have been. *S*

I would lose many thoughts, that is why as soon as I think and feel it I write it and it is done...I just wish I would be hit more often as you are with the words to put on paper. Very good. starinthedark

It is an awful feeling to lose a poem like that.  Felt with you throughout the poem.  I once wrote 7 poems in one night.  I put them directly on to my laptop, but was so sleepy that I managed to lose them all.  I managed to resurrect 5 of them, but couldn't remember a thing about the other 2, so they are forever lost on the wind.

I will be looking out for a poem about the country and feet, not necessarily in the title.

I'm glad this popped up again -- because I have managed to find that poem and write it.....

It has a house, and feet....just like I remembered!
